At age 49 and I was approved for a breast reduction. Six months after having the breast reduction I had been golfing with my husband and after a few holes of golf I had to quit as my left arm was so sore. A couple of days later I was bending down and felt the pain again in my left arm and just happened to feel my breast. Feeling my breast, I found a golf ball size (cyst is what came to my mind) in my left breast. I was not alarmed as I had my mammogram and breast reduction just 6 months ago. I called the surgeon that did the breast reduction and he took me in immediately with the reassurance that it must be a cyst. He did a biopsy and it came back positive for cancer. I decided to have a mastectomy as my mother died from breast cancer when she was 59 years old. After the mastectomy, it was determined that I had stage 4 breast cancer and needed further treatment.
I started to reach out for support. The support has been overwhelming from the gals at Hope Chest. I participated in my first ever Fillies Race for Hope, and it was everything I imagined. Now it is time for me to thank God for the opportunity that I can help give back and support Hope Chest. I want to be involved as much as I can!
