Q. What services does the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation provide?

A.  Hope Chest helps with urgent, emergency needs for daily living expenses such as rent or mortgage, utilities, child care during treatment, transportation to treatment and delivers nutrious meals.

Q. Do I have to live in the state of Minnesota?

A.  No, you do not need to be a Minnesota resident. However, you must currently be receiving treatment for breast cancer in the state of Minnesota. 

Q. Do I have to be currently in treatment for breast cancer?

A.  Yes, you must be in active treatment. We define active treatment as chemotherapy, radiation or surgery with a recovery time of more than four weeks. Hormone therapy, palliative and hospice care is not considered active treatment. 

Q. Does Hope Chest help with food?

A.  Yes, Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation partners with Open Arms to deliver Hope Chest Meals that Heal to the home for the breast cancer patient, as well as age appropriate food for children and a caretaker living in the home. You will have the opportunity to request assistance for meals as part of the application process.

Q. Do you provide support for patients fighting other cancers?

A.  No, our focus is breast cancer.

Q. Do I have to get my treatments from a particular provider?

A.  No. Any hospital or cancer treatment center in Minnesota is acceptable.

Q.  Is there an income limit to receive services?

A.  There is no income limit. However, the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation does ask for your income range and this is considered during the application approval process along with other vital information.

Q. Is there a limit to how many services I can receive in a year?

A.  The Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation’s objective is to help as many families experiencing breast cancer as we can each year.  Due to the limited financial resources, we do take into consideration whether you have received help previously from the Foundation, but it doesn’t preclude you from receiving additional support.

Q. How do I apply for assistance?

A.  As a breast cancer patient receiving treatment in the state of Minnesota, you can apply individually or with the assistance of your nurse navigator or social worker at the hospital or clinic where you are receiving treatment. It will take 5-10 minutes to complete the application.

Q. What happens once I have submitted my application?

A.  You will receive an automatic response via the email provided that your application has been received, and the review process will begin immediately once verified by your health care provider. Once verified your application will move forward in the consideration process. You will be notified via email within 5-7 days with the final status of your application. 

Q. Can I stop during the application process and come back to it at a later time?

A.  No. Please allow 5-10 minutes to complete the application.

Q. How prevalent is breast cancer in the United States?

A. The lifetime incidence of breast cancer in women is one in eight (13%). The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be 4500 new breast cancer diagnoses in Minnesota in 2018.  Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women.

Q. How does breast cancer compare to other cancers that women experience?

A. For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer besides lung cancer. One out of every four cancer diagnoses are for breast cancer, making it the second most commonly diagnosed cancer (behind skin cancer).    

Q. Are there more survivors now due to improved care and early detection?

 A. Yes! There are currently more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.

Q. Do men get breast cancer?

 A. Yes. For men, the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1/10th of 1% (1 in 1,000).

Q. How was Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation established?

A. After losing her two sisters to breast cancer, our Founder Barbara Hensley became painfully aware of the challenges faced by individuals with breast cancer. Her sisters' struggle, lasting over six years, was devastating to Barbara. In 2001, she resigned from her corporate executive position and founded the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Store and Foundation, where the dedicated staff continues our commitment to make a difference.

Q. What makes the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation different from other breast cancer charities?

A.  Our programs help individuals in treatment for breast cancer in the state of Minnesota. Hope Chest Emergency Assistance Grants provide financial support for urgent, non-medical needs. Our online grant application allows us to distribute help quickly and without a lengthy or complex qualification process.

Q. How does Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation get funds directly to patients?

A.  Hope Chest works directly with healthcare providers and patients to connect them with our Emergency Assistance Grants. 

Q. How much money has the Hope Chest Emergency Assistance Programs given to assist women and men battling breast cancer?

 A.  Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation has provided over $1.7 million to over 5,000 patients in the last 15+ years.

Q. What relationship do Hope Chest Resale Shops have with the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation?

A.  The Hope Chest for Breast Cancer business model is a combination of a charitable Foundation and up-scale Resale Shop; our retail stores create an on-going revenue contribution for the Emergency Assistance Grant program.

Q. Why would I want to shop at the Hope Chest Resale Shop?

A.  The Hope Chest Resale Shop is open seven days a week and sell donated, high-end and gently used women’s clothing/accessories. Hope Chest Resale Shop also offers upscale furniture and home décor at a fraction of retail cost. All items — from evening wear to end tables — are donated from individuals, retail stores or corporations.Visit us at our flagship store in Orono. The mantra of our Resale Shops is “Excellent quality, excellent experience, excellent buys…all for an excellent cause.”

Q. Besides the Resale Shop, how does the Foundation raise critical funds?

A.  Hope Chest receives individual and business donations through our giving circles, annual fundraising event. We are also the gracious benefactor of many third-party events, for more information on these and other fundraisers, please visit our Events Page.

Q. How can I get involved in supporting Hope Chest for Breast Cancer?

A.  There are many volunteer opportunities with Hope Chest, including our fundraisers, assisting in the stores and helping in the foundation office. You can also help by making a financial contribution or donating furniture, clothing,or accessories. Q.  Is the Hope Chest Resale Shop a consignment stores?

A.  No. We are 100% donation driven. We accept personal, retail and corporate donations.

QHow can I donate goods?

A.  Please review the list of donations we accept at the store (See List).   If you are unsure you can call our stores or email us at stores@hopechest.com

Q.  What can I donate?

A.  We accept high end furniture, decorative home accessories and women’s clothing and accessories. Please review our goods donation page to also review the items that we are unable to accept, as well as alternative resources for you to consider. 

Q. I am interested in donating to Hope Chest but need to confirm IRS 501(c)(3) status and obtain Federal Tax ID #.  How can I get this information?

A.  We have all the required documentation confirming Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Our Tax ID# is 41-2019565 please contact us at foundation@hopechest.com for more information or documentation.

Q.  Do I receive a receipt for my donation?

A.  Yes. All items accepted are inventoried and itemized on your account. If there are items that do not meet the criteria of Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Resale Shops, we will pass it along to one of the local charities we partner with. Donor statements are sent out early January for the previous tax year.  Please note: it will be your responsibility to assign the amount for items donated.

Q. How do you determine the price for the items I am donating?

A.  When donations come from a retailer, we prefer them to have tags on them listing the Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).  Items received without tags are sourced in depth online for original MSRP and current resale value. Once we establish an MSRP, we will price accordingly based on condition of item. 

Q.  Does your Resale Store offer pick-up of donations or deliveries of purchases? 

A.  Yes!  You may call or email to arrange a pick-up of your donated goods for a $25 fee. We appreciate photos of larger furniture items in advance to ensure that we have or can allocate space in the store for those items.   When you purchase your treasure at one of our stores, you can arrange a delivery at check-out for a $50 fee. Pick-ups and deliveries are made Tuesdays through Thursdays. 

Q.  What is your return policy?

A.   All items sold at Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Resale Shop is final and as-is. If you are transporting larger items yourself, you will be responsible for moving it from the show floor to your vehicle. Store Associates and Staff cannot help you load or unload items to your vehicle.

A.  The patient will receive a automatic response that their application has been received. 

Q. Will I as the health care provider be notifited if a patient requests support?

A.  Yes. An email is automatically sent to you (the paitent's health care provider) to confirm active treatment. The sooner treatment is confirmed, the sooner the patient's application can be processed.
